CHENNAI: Members of the Tamil Nadu All Meat Merchants' Confederation (TAMMCON) have opposed the entry of corporate sector and multi-national corporations into the retail meat business and urged the Government to stop the move.

Addressing reporters here on Thursday, confederation secretary R Anbu Vendan said that the livelihood of over 50,000 workers directly depended on the meat business and around 5,000 shops were involved in the trade in the city. They feared that the entry of big business houses and foreign companies would threaten the livelihood of small merchants and workers and gradually displace them.

The confederation also took exception to the non-allocation of funds for modernisation of the slaughterhouse in Pulianthope.
