On the occasion of 143rd Gandhi Jayanthi, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam cadres observed a day-long fast here demanding the State government to introduce total prohibition.

Several thousands of youngsters among others were drinking liquor at bars attached to government-run IMFL retail outlets, spoiling their health and posing a threat to the society’s future. The government could not justify it claiming that it was earning huge revenue from selling the liquor.

This attitude should stop in the larger public interest, the speakers said and demanded closure of the liquor shops in the State forthwith and look for other avenues to generate revenue for carrying out welfare measures.

MDMK urban district secretary Pudur K. Boominathan presided in the presence of senior party functionary M. D. Chinnachellam, Mahaboob John, T. Subbiah, M. Manoharan, S. Parameswaran, V. Pasupathi Ammal.

The fast which was observed in Munichalai in the city was inaugurated by Pon. Manoharan of Gandhiya Makkal Iyakkam.
