Vaiko will take out a padayatra from Uvari to Madurai in December

: Urging the State Government to impose total prohibition in Tamil Nadu, the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam cadres observed a fast here on Tuesday in connection with ‘Gandhi Jayanthi’ celebrations.

Led by the party functionary Nanjil K. Sampath, around 250 cadres observed the fast at Jawahar Grounds, Palayamkottai.

Rs.16,000 crore

Addressing the protestors, Mr. Sampath said the State Government was getting a whopping sum of over Rs.16,000 crore annually as over 49 lakh persons, mostly labourers and youths, were consuming alcohol every day across Tamil Nadu.

“In an attempt to save the Tamils from the evils of liquor and demanding total prohibition, the MDMK cadres, led by general secretary Vaiko, will take out a padayatra from Uvari in Tirunlveli district to Madurai in December this year,” said Mr. Sampath.

Former MLA T. Sadan Thirumalai Kumar, party functionaries K.M.A. Nizam, P.A. Saravanan, M. Perumal, ‘Minnal’ Mohamed Ali, T.M. Rajendran, Arasu Amalraj, ‘Uvari’ Raymond and others participated in the fast.


In the protest held at Tuticorin, the MDMK cadres, led by party’s district secretary S. Joel, observed fast.


The cadres of MDMK observed a fast in front of the collectorate demanding the Government to enforce total prohibition in the state.

District secretary, Thillai Selvam, led the agitation.
