Young hoopsters, high on octane, dazzled the audience with their deft play during the State-level inter-collegiate invitation basketball tournament, which concluded here on Thursday.
The three-day tournament, which was organised by Bishop Heber College, featured eight teams. At the end of the league phase, four teams – Madras Christian College, Chennai, Loyola College, Chennai, Bishop Heber College, and Gandhigram Rural Institute, Dindigul – qualified for the semifinals.
“The tournament had some engaging contests. The intense competition reflected the performance of the players,” said L.C. John, Director of Physical Education, Bishop Heber College.
In the final, Madras Christian College defeated Loyola College to clinch the Bishop Solomon Doraisawmy Memorial Trophy. The host bagged the third spot while Gandhigram Rural Institute finished fourth.
“This was the fourth edition of the tournament and its popularity has grown with every passing year,” Mr. John added. K. Neethi, president, Tiruchi District Tennis Association, distributed prizes in the presence of D. Paul Dhayabaran, principal, Bishop Heber College. The winner received a cash award of Rs.8,000. The teams that finished second, third and fourth got Rs.5,000, Rs.3,000 and Rs.3,000 respectively.
