May Day celebrated with fervour in southern districts

Political parties organised various functions to celebrate May Day here on Wednesday.

The office of Tirunelveli City District Anna Thozhirsangam, affiliated to the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, was inaugurated at Melapalayam. It was opened by joint secretary of the trade union A.Sankaralingam in the presence of Mayor Vijila Sathyananth and Tirunelveli city district secretary of AIADMK Sudha K.Paramasivan.

CPI(M) MLA K.Balabharathi hoisted the party flag at Tirunelveli Town in the May Day celebrations organised by Santhipillaiyar Corner autorickshaw drivers. In the evening, the autorickshaw drivers took out a rally and organised a public meeting.

Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam organised a meeting at Valliyoor.

On behalf of Charlie Dental Hospital and Indian Red Cross Society’s Tirunelveli Chapter, a dental camp was organised at Palayamkottai for the benefit of autorickshaw drivers. Assistant Commissioner of Police, Palayamkottai, C.Rajamannar and State vice-chairman of IRCS D.A.Prabakar participated in the camp.

Workers affiliated to the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) took out a rally to mark May Day. It was led by P.Ramar of the BSNL Employees’ Union. The rally stressed protection of labour rights, M.Murugan, convener of the rally and member of the CITU, Tuticorin, said.

All workers should be aware of their rights. They must enrol in welfare boards formed by the government and avail themselves of all benefits, he said.

The rally was taken out from Bala Vinayagar Temple to Bryant Nagar where a public meeting was organised. R.Karumalayan, State deputy general secretary, CITU, and S.Meenal Sethuraman, State secretary, participated.

May Day was celebrated in grand manner in different parts of Kanyakumari district by trade unions affiliated to political parties.

District organiser of the AIADMK Tamil Mahan Hussein distributed welfare assistance to workers at a function held at Vadaserry omni bus stand.

Former Tourism Minister N.Suresh Rajan of the DMK disbursed welfare assistance to workers at a function organised by the Kanyakumari District Autorickshaw Drivers’ Welfare Association.

May Day was celebrated at Kulasekaram, Vettunthi at Kuzhithurai, Ranithottam TNSTC depot, Kanyakumari, Suchindrum, Meenakshipuram, Palpannai, Thuckalay, Padmanabhapuram, Monday Market, Colachel, Karungal and Kaliyakkavilai in the district.
