S. Veerakumar of Kongu Vellalar MHSS secured the district first
COIMBATORE: Friday belonged to matriculation school students in the district. And rightfully so, as the first three rank holders happen to be from there.
S. Veerakumar of Kongu Vellalar Matriculation Higher Secondary School secured the district first rank, scoring 1179 out of 1200. He has a centum in chemistry, 199 each in physics and mathematics, 198 in computer science, 194 in Tamil and 189 in English.
“I expected anything between 1175 and 1180 and the mark did not come as a surprise,” says the son of powerloom weaver K. Subramaniyam. He plans to pursue an engineering programme in information technology from Anna University, Chennai.
“Long hours of study coupled with parents' and teachers' support helped me get the rank,” he says. He listens to music and also plays chess.
His Principal Vasanthi Balraj says the boy is disciplined, and has consistently performed well in academics.
P. Yalini Devi and S. Jagan share the district second rank with 1177. The girl, a student of SVGV Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Karamadai, has 191 in Tamil, 190 in English, 199 each in physics and chemistry, 200 in biology and 198 in mathematics against her name.
Mr. Jagan, a student of Vijayalakshmi Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Sirumugai, has secured 188 in Tamil, 193 in English, 199 each in physics and chemistry, 200 in computer science and 198 in mathematics.
And, their similarity ends with the total. The boy, son of a foundry supervisor, wants to pursue electronics and communication engineering in Anna University, Chennai, and then masters in IIT. He attributes his success to his parents and brother S.S. Jayanth, an engineering student.
Ms. Yalini, daughter of a TNEB supervisor, has interest in both electronics and communication engineering and aeronautical engineering.
And then she plans to take up a management course in IIM. The girl plays ball badminton and is a member of the district team.
Third rank holder G. Rasiga of Avila Convent Matriculation Higher Secondary School is just a mark below the second rank holders – 1176 out of 1200. The girl wants to take up research work in science and wants to join the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research.
With a clear focus on what she wants to do, the girl says no other course interests her as much as science education. She has already applied to the institute.
In her leisure hours she reads Harry Potter and also listens to music.
