CUDDALORE: The maternity ward at Chidambaram town has been functioning without a doctor for the past three years. Though several representations have been made to the authorities concerned, no remedial measures have been taken so far, according to C.D.Appavu, secretary of the Consumer Guild of Tamil Nadu.

In a representation addressed to the Deputy Director of Health Services, the forum noted that for want of doctors proper attention could not be given to expectant mothers. Therefore, this lacuna should be set right at the earliest, it noted.

The forum also observed that the authorities should make it a point to immediately fill the vacancies in government hospitals and Primary Health Centres so as to render better health services.

It further stated that as part of the drive against malaria the health staff were collecting blood samples from the endemic areas during daytime. It said that for obtaining the real status of the afflictions blood samples should be collected only at night, say at 9 p.m.
