MADURAI: In a daring robbery, three masked men broke open the door of a house at Vidya Colony 3rd street in K.K. Nagar in the early hours of Thursday and escaped with gold jewels after tying the inmates in a room.

When the masked men barged into their house, Albert Johnson (73), a retired professor, and his wife tried to raise an alarm, but the robbers threatened them and tied them up in a room.

After taking away about 30 sovereigns of jewels and some other valuables, the gang escaped. Anna Nagar police have registered a case and are on the look out for the robbers.

Another case

At around 1.45 a.m. prior to the K.K. Nagar robbery, a similar case was reported. M. Ilango (41) of Ultra College Road, Tahsildar Nagar, heard somebody knocking at the door. When he opened the door, he saw three men who had covered their faces. They threatened him to part with the valuables at knife point. He gave them Rs. 25,000 cash and seven sovereigns of ‘thali’ chain following which the robbers escaped under the cover of darkness. Karuppayoorani police have registered a case of robbery.

A senior police officer said that a combing operation would be carried out on Thursday night.
