A knife-wielding man assaulted a woman and robbed her of her gold jewellery in Adambakkam on Friday. Her three-year old daughter was sleeping nearby at the time.

St. Thomas Mount district police said Muthulakshmi (26) was in her home on Third Street, Brindavan Nagar (Extension), when around 2 p.m., a stranger knocked on her door.

When Muthulakshmi opened it, the man said he was from her gas cylinder agency and that he had come to attend to a complaint lodged by her husband Balamurugan.

Believing him, Muthulakshmi opened the door and once inside, he asked her for a pen. When she turned around to pick up a pen, the stranger locked the door from the inside. He then pulled out a knife and attacked her, resulting in injuries on her forehead.

He then snatched the gold jewellery she was wearing, weighing a little more than 10 sovereigns and fled. Muthulakshmi called out for help and also informed her husband. She was taken to a private hospital, where she was treated for her injuries. A team has been formed to track down the culprit.
