CHENNAI: A 42-year-old man who tried to obtain a loan of Rs.50 crore from a Delhi-based financial institution allegedly by furnishing fake documents was arrested by the Peravalur police on Thursday.

According to police sources, the accused, C. Alex of Kalakkadu in Tirunelveli district, applied for the loan by giving a fake address. When the financial institution sought a bank guarantee, he sent forged documents purportedly issued by a nationalised bank in Chennai.

But the bank officials clarified that no such guarantee had been given and that the papers were forged.

Based on a complaint lodged by the bank, the Peravalur police arrested Alex. As the accused claimed that a bank employee had helped him obtain the documents, the case was transferred to the Central Crime Branch for further investigation, the sources added.
