Manikandan (35), van driver of Alanganallur, Madurai district, was arrested on Wednesday morning in connection with an attempt to steal stone idols of Gods and Goddesses belonging to Sri Ranganathar Temple in Perunkanji near Sholinghur, which were buried in the Perunkanji lake.

Six persons

According to S. Seeetharam, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Arakkonam, Manikandan and five others from Madurai district came in a van to the site and tried to dig out idols buried by the public for protection. A passer-by alerted police who arrested Manikandan, while others fled.

A case has been registered against the six under Sections 379 (theft) and 511 (punishment for attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or imprisonment) of the Indian Penal Code.
