P. Kannan (42), of Kathapadi village near Gangavalli in Salem district, has been detained under Goondas Act on Wednesday for his alleged involvement in brewing illicit liquor. According to the police, Kannan was a serial offender against whom the Prohibition Enforcement Wing Police have booked many cases in the past. The police said that a recommendation to detain him under the Act was forwarded to the District Collector, who approved it on Wednesday. The accused was lodged in the Salem Central Prison, the police added.

Counterfeit currencies seized

Ayilpatti police arrested two farmers on Wednesday for allegedly printing and circulating counterfeit currency notes. According to the police, D. Prakash (35) of Karkudalpatti Aruvangadu in Rasipuram Taluk and his accomplice M. Saravanan (30) of Kinathukadu in the same village were printing the currencies in Prakash’s house. The police said that they raided the house based on a tip-off. Fake currencies worth Rs. 2,300 and a colour photocopier have been seized.
