A man and his daughter were killed on the spot when a speeding sport utility vehicle (SUV) hit them on Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road at Tambaram in the early hours on Monday. The rest of the family was walking a few metres behind them when the accident took place.
Ramasamy (45) and his family, including his five children – three sons and two daughters – were living on Erikarai Street, Narayanapuram. He was working as a security guard at a private firm in Velachery and his youngest daughter Vendha (19) was studying Plus-Two in a government aided school in East Tambaram.
They had gone to Tiruvannamalai and reached Tambaram at 1.15 a.m. They were crossing the road below the road overbridge on their way to reach Velachery Main Road to board bus to return home.
The family had barely taken a few steps when the speeding SUV hit Ramasamy and Vendha, who were walking together. They died on the spot. The others witnessed the accident in shock.
The bodies were taken to Tambaram Taluk Government Hospital in Chromepet, where post-mortem was performed. Saravanan (25), driver of the SUV, was arrested on charges of rash and negligent driving. He is reported to have lost control of the vehicle at that time. It is still not clear if the driver felt drowsy when the accident took place. He said that he had turned on the vehicle's wipers and visibility was not good when the accident took place, police said.
