ERODE: Villagers caught one of a four-member gang which tried to rob a couple of their jewels and cash on Monday night and handed him over to the police.

According to the police, Sivaprakash, an employee in a sugar mill at Appakudal and his wife Malar were on their way to Gobichettipalayam from Appakudal on his motorcycle. Near the Ayyampalayam junction, a car stopped the vehicle. Three persons got down and threatened to kill them if they did not give their jewellery and money.

The couple raised an alarm. When people started coming, the car driver fled leaving the trio on the road. The three culprits started running into a sugarcane field and one of the villagers Muthu chased them on a motorcycle but could not catch them.

A few yards away from Ayyampalayam, a stranger stopped Muthu while returning and told him that he wanted to go to the police station to give some complaint. Muthu took him on the vehicle but he grew suspicious and stopped the vehicle in a crowded place. When the person threatened Muthu with a revolver (a toy), the villagers pounced on him. They handed him over to the Kavindapady police.

The police said he was one of members of the gang.
