Police have arrested a 37-year-old man for shooting his 13-year-old son using a country-made gun on Thursday night.

According to police, Sankar, a resident of Athanavoor in Yelagiri Hills, picked up a quarrel with his wife Mangamma (32) in an inebriated state. When their son Prithviraj tried to intervene, Sankar picked up a country-made gun and pointed it at his wife. Prithviraj tried to shield his mother assuming that his father would not fire on seeing him. However, Sankar pulled the trigger and Prithviraj sustained injury on his back.

He was rushed to Tirupattur GH and referred to Government Vellore Medical College Hospital. He was then shifted to the Government Hospital, Chennai. Mangamma lodged a police complaint at 11.15 p.m. Police nabbed Sankar and are investigating. They are also looking at how Sankar was in the illegal possession of the gun.
