A 55-year-old man has been arrested on charges of murdering his son at Adambakkam in the wee hours of Friday.

Police sources said Mohan, a Central Government employee, was a resident of Erikarai Street and living with his wife, daughter and son Ashwin, an autorickshaw driver. Ashwin (27) and Mohan are reported to have frequent quarrels with each other over ownership of property.

Under the influence of liquor, Ashwin had even abused his father and threatened him with dire consequences if he did not register the house in his name.

The family members went to bed on Thursday night and when Mohan's wife and their daughter woke up early on Friday, they noticed Ashwin lying in a pool of blood with his face smashed. Police removed Ashwin's body to Tambaram Taluk Government Hospital for post-mortem. Mohan was arrested at Perungalathur later in the day. He had smashed his son's face with a crowbar, police said, adding he did so fearing for his own life and the safety of his family.
