Egmore police arrested a retired forest ranger who allegedly kidnapped a 46-year-old man in order to retrieve a sum of Rs. 2 lakh which he had given to the victim to get his son a job.

Police sources said the suspect Muniyandi had given the money to Vijayakumar of Rajai Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur, few years ago after the later promised the job through a scheme in a private trust.

After realising he was cheated, Muniyandi approached Vijayakumar on many occasions but to no avail.

On March 19, Muniyandi along with friend, assaulted Vijayakumar and bundled him into an autorickshaw in Adyar.

The duo locked him up in a house in K.K. Nagar and later shifted him to an apartment in Egmore and demanded a ransom for his release.

Vijayakumar managed to call the police control room on Tuesday afternoon. An Egmore police team rushed to the spot and rescued the detainee. Muniyandi who fled from the apartment was arrested on Wednesday, sources added.
