No casualty reported; cause of fire under investigation
A major fire broke out in a private oil mill at Veerappan Chatram early on Monday morning, causing extensive damage to the property. There were no casualties.
Sources said the mill manufactures gingelly oil and cake. The watchman of the mill, Kandasamy, saw flames engulfing a portion of the building and alerted fire and rescue services personnel. Before the firefighters arrived at the spot, the flames, aided by the huge amount of gingelly oil stored in the mill, spread to most parts of the building.
Fire engines from Erode station were pressed into service. As the flames remained uncontrolled, more fire engines from Bhavani and Modakurichi fire stations were called in to put out the fire.
Firefighters also used a number of private water tankers to fetch water to douse the flames. It took more than three hours for the firefighters to control the flames.
The mill had a good amount of gingelly oil, which made our task of controlling the flames difficult, fire service officials said.
The mill’s machinery, raw material and interiors were completely charred. The cause of the fire was under investigation. The total extent of the damage caused by the fire is yet to be ascertained.
Further investigation was going on, firefighters said.
