Chennai: Rallies and distribution of sweets, food and medicines will mark Mahavir Jayanthi to be celebrated on Saturday. Pratibha Patil, Governor of Rajasthan, will participate in a few programmes. Shree Jain Maha Sangh will organise `ahimsa march,' in various parts from 6 a.m. on that day.

Sweets will be distributed at Central Jail and Puzhal Prison. A.P. Shah, Chief Justice of Madras High Court, will flag off an `ahimsa rally' at Gandhi Statue on Marina Beach to be held under the auspice of Karuna International. Himmatmal Mardia, former president of the Sangh, said free master health check up camps would be held.

According to a G.O. issued in 1980, Corporation and municipal authorities have been requested to close slaughter-houses and shops selling meat, beef and pork, he said.
