: A swanky vehicle with a 600-litre water capacity fitted with a generator to pump water to put out fire and among other facilities has arrived at the fire service station here on Wednesday.

Explaining the features of the new arrival, Divisional Fire Officer K. Karuppiah said that the ‘water mist fire fighting vehicle’ can negotiate easily even in narrow by-lanes in the event of fire calls. Apart from many facilities provided, the vehicle has 150 feet long hose pipe and could go very near to the fire spot or the premises on a close range, say from a distance of 20 feet and the water could be sprayed forcefully.

This may help in containing the fire instantly and prevent it from spreading, he noted.

The vehicle, which costs about Rs 10 lakh, would be a boon to fire fighters as it had more facilities. Further, it is something like providing a first-aid treatment since with 600 litres of water, the spread of fire could be put out instantly by reaching very close to the spot. Once the aggressive spread is contained within minutes, the fire fighters can march forward with more confidence; Mr. Karuppiah said and added that fire fighters in the department are trained to handle the gadgets.

The red coloured vehicle, which was demonstrated to the media persons at the fire service station near the District Collector’s office campus, could also move at a faster speed as the gadgets are compact.

Apart from the new vehicle, the fire and rescue services department has a two-wheeler with similar gadget to put out fire.

The objective, Mr. Karuppiah said the fire fighters could ride the vehicle in smaller lanes and carry the hose with them, which has a mixture of water and foam solution.
