The Sattur Chamber of Commerce and Industries has urged the Union Railways Minister, Mamta Banjeree, to take up survey for laying tunnel track in the Western Ghats connecting Madurai directly with Sabarimala.

In a memorandum, the chamber general secretary, P.T.K.A. Balasubramanian, said that Madurai and Sabarimala could be connected through the Western Ghats in a shorter distance. Expertise that was used for the Konkan Railways could be used for this project.

Land acquisition would be for a minimum distance of 8 km only because the rest of the track would be laid in the Western Ghats. Besides becoming a milestone project for the Indian Railways, it could generate employment opportunities for many, he said.
