Tamil Nadu Governor K. Rosaiah conferred an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters on legendary music director M.S. Viswanathan during the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University’s 20th convocation held here on Friday.

The 84-year-old ‘Mellisai Mannar,’ clad in cherry red colour ceremonial convocation robes, received the degree and the medal from the Governor amidst thunderous applause.

It was Mr. Viswanathan, who scored the music for ‘Thamizh Thaai Vaazhththu,’ written by Manonmaniam Sundaranar, after whom the university was named.

The citation read by A.K. Kumaraguru, Vice-Chancellor, MSU, recalled Mr. Viswanathan’s association with T.K. Ramamurthy and legendary lyricist Kannadasan that produced soothing evergreen numbers.

“His melodious music comforts the hearts and minds of millions of people across the globe even today and has given eternity to the words of the lyricists,” remarked Dr. Kumaraguru.
