It will augment water supply to 2,391 hamlets

Phase V of the Hogenakkal Drinking Water Supply and Fluorosis Mitigation Project has been awarded to Larsen and Toubro Limited, said Mr. Hitesh Kumar S. Makwana, joint managing director of the project, on Thursday.

After an inter-departmental coordination and review meeting with officials of various government departments, Mr. Makwana told reporters that construction work of Phase V, which would augment water supply to 2,391 hamlets in seven town panchayats and five panchayat unions in Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri districts, had been awarded to Larsen & Toubro Limited.

Officials of Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board, National Highways Authority of India, State Highways, Town Panchayat and the Municipality attended the meeting. Besides supplying drinking water from Cauvery River through the Hogenakkal Drinking Water Supply system, the project aims at reducing fluorosis level in ground water.

The work to reduce fluorosis content has been award to Bangalore-based Centre for Symbiosis of Technology (STEM) headed by Dr. P. Virupakshi, programme coordinator, Fluorosis Mitigation Programme (Tamil Nadu). The firm will undertake a complete door-to-door survey in about three lakh houses in these two districts. The level of fluoride will be assessed with the help of 500 medical officers, 3,000 teachers and 1,000 NGOs in these two districts.

Training for medical officers, teachers and NGOs would be given by the end of January.

Joint Director, Health Services, would coordinate the training programme, Mr. Makwana said.

District Collector V. Arun Roy, Chief Engineer Hogenakkal Water Supply Project N. Ravichandran and other officials participated in meeting.
