The 19-day old baby who was kidnapped from a hospital on October 25 may have been found but police remain uncertain.

The baby was five days old when kidnapped and was found abandoned two days ago in a train bound to Chennai from Tiruvallur. While the mother R. Kalaiarasi is certain that the child is hers, police said the baby would not be handed over without confirmatory DNA analysis. Authorities of the RSRM maternity hospital, from where the child was kidnapped, were told that the preliminaries of the analysis will be conducted on Friday.

The police on Wednesday had asked Ms. Kalaiarasi to identify a woman they had picked up for questioning. Kalaiarasi, however, said that the woman was not the baby-lifter. However, she claimed to be able to identify the baby by the green sweater it was wearing and said that she had a pair of socks that came with the sweater in her possession.

She gave a statement at the government-run children’s home in Royapuram. The infant was shifted to a home in T. Nagar. Late in the evening, the mother was sent back to the hospital.
