DINDIGUL: Two persons were injured and 100 bags of rice meant for Public Distribution System were damaged when a lorry transporting the commodity to Palani from here fell in to a canal at Palam Rajakkapatti near here on Tuesday. The driver Manoharan and cleaner were injured in the accident and admitted to Dindigul Government Hospital.

The driver, who attempted to avoid colliding with a vehicle coming in the opposite direction, lost control and drove the lorry into the 20-feet deep canal. Rice bags fell into the canal and got soaked.

Loadmen from the warehouse unloaded the rice bags that were in good condition and stocked them in a private farm. Later, the rice bags were loaded in another lorry for transportation to Palani.

About 300 bags of PDS rice were loaded from the warehouse of Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation in the outskirts of Dindigul. A case has been registered in this connection.

Many heavy vehicle drivers using Dindigul-Palani highway said that this stretch was very narrow with many blind turns without any signboards. Many accidents took place at this particular spot. Widening of the existing road and straightening blind curves would eliminate road accidents, they said.
