Collector R. Kirlosh Kumar on Wednesday ordered the detention of S. Lourde Antonysamy (31) of Tirunelveli under the Prevention of Black-marketing and Maintenance of Supplies of Essential Commodities Act. Subsequently, Antonysamy was lodged in the Cuddalore Central Prison.

Inspector Senthilkumar of the Civil Supplies Criminal Investigation Department told The Hindu that Antonysamy was arrested when he was driving a container lorry carrying an unauthorised consignment of 315 bags of PDS rice, worth about Rs. 30 lakh on Sunday.

Mr. Senthilkumar and his team were carrying out a vehicle-check on Kandrakottai Bazaar Street when a car sped past them. When the team gave it a chase, occupants stopped the vehicle and ran away. However driver S. Kannan (31) of Tirunelveli was caught. Kannan told the police that a container lorry carrying PDS rice was heading that way. Civil Supplies CID sleuths stopped the lorry and interrogated its driver Antonysamy. He admitted to the crime saying that he and his accomplices were in the habit of changing the chassis and engine numbers and registration number of vehicles used for smuggling PDS rice.
