Loadmen at various godowns of Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation (TNCSC) affiliated to All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU) laid siege to the Labour department office here on Monday to highlight their working conditions and social security.

K. Govindarajan, state secretary of AICCTU and also an employee of TNCSC, said there was an urgent need to enhance the wages of load men. “At present, they are given wages at the rate of Rs 14.36 for every tonne of sugar loaded or unloaded at the civil supplies godown premises and at the rate of Rs. 17.95 for each tonne of rice loaded or unloaded.” he added.

The demand of the workers were that the minimum daily wages should be fixed at Rs 500 per worker and the work scheduled to be restricted to eight hours a day.

“They should also be given dearness allowance of Rs. 84.15 as per the existing computed figures,” Mr. Govindarajan pointed out.

Another major issue raised by the load men were the poor facilities on many of the godown premises, which, according to them, did not have toilet, drinking water supply and space to take lunch.
