A live workshop cum conference on minimally invasive colorectal surgery – COLOREC 2013 – is being organised here from May 24 to 26 by the Gem Hospital and Research Centre.
Addressing a press conference here, its Director C. Palanivelu said colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel diseases were on the rise due to changes in lifestyle habits and consumption of tobacco and alcohol.
Experts in the field from Italy, Spain, France and Thailand will be giving demonstrations on advanced techniques in surgery. Various procedures such as complex surgery for cancer of colon, rectum and disease of anus such as piles and fistula will be performed and discussed. Over 400 delegates were expected to take part in the conference.
As part of the conference, Dr. Palanivelu informed that a cancer screening camp will be held at the hospital on Sunday (May 12) between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Patients found with problems relating to colon, rectum and anal canal will be offered testing and treatment completely free of cost during the conference,.
