The district administration has sought Rs. 2 crore to provide infrastructure facilities at tourism spots and develop little known tourism centres in the district, P.Manthirachalam, Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, informed the district planning commission here on Thursday.

The administration sought a further Rs.1.25 crore to lay the Mukkadal – Velimalai approach road. The work would start within a couple of months after approval was obtained from the government.

The councillors urged the project officer to take steps to desilt water bodies. They urged the government to expedite the Ulakkai Aruvi and the Tamirabarani drinking water schemes.

Paul Sekar, a councillor, staged a walkout from the council meeting in protest over the failure to release water from Pechipparai dam for the benefit of devotees visiting Mondaicadu Bhagavathy Amman Temple.

He pointed out that the district administration released water from the dam every year during the temple festival. But the Public Works Department failed to do so this year.
