Tirupur: As many as 12 literary associations came together to submit a joint memoranda to the District Collector and Corporation Mayor recently requesting them to set up a District Library and strengthen the existing libraries in the city.
R. Eswaran, district secretary, Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers Association, pointed out that though Tirupur became a district headquarters more than a year ago, District Library was yet to be set up.
“The administration should take up the project expeditiously for the benefit of youth who have to widen their knowledge to remain competitive in today's knowledge-driven society," he said.
The literary associations also briefed the present status of the three government-run libraries situated along Park road, near Old Bus Stand and at Kumar Nagar.
According to them, these libraries have not been strengthened for the past many years to cater to the needs of growing population in the city.
Another demand raised by the literary associations was the need for an Art and Culture gallery in the city to promote performing arts.
The gallery should have podium to enable the artists to perform and the capacity to seat at least 1,000 spectators.
