THANJAVUR: Literacy rate stood at 73.47 per cent in Tamil Nadu, said M.S. Shanmugham, Collector, here on Tuesday.

Addressing a World Literacy Day meeting organised under the continuing education scheme, the Collector said that in the age group of 15 to 45, a total of 1,18,700 persons had been identified as illiterates under the continuing education programme in the State. Out of them 49,837 registered themselves under the programme.

In Thanjavur district, one village in each of the 14 panchayat unions had been selected and literacy programmes taken up. Over 50 panchayats had attained total literacy in the district.

The Collector flagged off a rally from the Sivaganga Park. V. Kumar, CEO, and Appadurai, CEO for Sarva Siksha Abhiyan, participated.
