A load of Indian Made Foriegn Liquor (IMFL) illegally transported to Erode from Puducherry was confiscated by a police team at Manickapalayam housing board area from a van operated for school trips, late on Tuesday night.

Displaying the seized cartons to the media on Wednesday, police said 491 bottles had been transferred from a pickup vehicle bearing Puducherry registration number, by its driver, to the van operated for school trips by Duraisamy (64) of Bharathidasan Salai, when a patrol team sighted them.

On seeing the police team approaching, the driver of the pickup vehicle whose identity is not known fled the spot, reportedly after snatching Duraisamy’s mobile phone.

The police identified the jeep owner as Selvakumar of Puducherry.

But, no contacts could be established as his mobile phone was in ‘switched off’ mode, the3 police sources said.

Duraisamy had revealed that he had developed a niche customer base for his liquor business through a few agents.

The Erode North police, who also confiscated the two vehicles, registered a case. Duraisamy was remanded in judicial custody.
