SRIVILLIPUTTUR: Most of the residential and commercial buildings here switched off the lights for nine minutes on Wednesday as part of an awareness programme on global warming jointly organised by Rotary Club of Srivilliputtur and Lion’s Club of Srivilliputtur in Virudhunagar district.

The lights were switched off at 9 p.m. for nine minutes. (Wednesday was chosen for the awareness programme when the date read 09.09.09).

Presidents of both the clubs, N.S. Velayutham and G. Ravindran, particiapted in an awareness rally taken out by college students of Srivilliputtur.

The rally highlighted that global warming could be controlled by avoiding unnecessary lighting and usage of electricity and usage of automobile fuel.

People were asked to use public transport system and bicycles so as to prevent pollution.

Head of the Department of Zoology, S.R.N. College, P. Gopalsamy, gave a lecture on alternative ways to prevent global warming.
