A four-year-old leopard was rescued from an open well situated on a farm at Andipatti hamlet near Udumalpet on Friday. People who went to draw water from the well for irrigating the crops spotted the leopard. The animal was seen sitting on a rocky surface inside the 80-ft-deep well. After a rescue operation that lasted about two hours, the team of forest officials led by Forest Rangers Thangaraj Paneerselvam and Mariappan pulled out the animal using a net. “Tranquilising cannot be done as the well contained good amount of water,” Mr. Paneerselvam said. Deputy Conservator of Forests and Deputy Director of Anamalai Tiger Reserve M. Dhanraj said that the leopard was healthy. The animal ran away into the ATR area, after it was rescued.
