CHENNAI: Five more Bills were introduced in the Assembly on Thursday.

Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin tabled a legislation to amend the Tamil Nadu Panchayats Act for abolishing local cess and local cess surcharge on farmers who, beginning this year, would have to pay land revenue of Rs.2 per acre of dry land and Rs.5 per acre of wet land.

The amendment became necessary in the wake of the announcement made in the budget.

Cooperation Minister Ko.Si. Mani moved another Bill to extend the period of appointment of special officers of cooperative societies by six more months.

Commercial Taxes Minister S.N.M. Ubayadullah introduced three Bills to amend the Value Added Tax Act. One was for redesignation of the post of Joint Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, Assistant Commissioner, Commercial Tax Officer and Deputy Commercial Tax Officer as Additional Commissioner, Joint Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, Assistant Commissioner and Commercial Tax Officer respectively.

While the second Bill was to permit the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to purchase goods at zero rate, the third sought to exempt hand-made steel trunk boxes and hand-made tin containers from the levy of tax.
