Department of Zoology, Rajah Serfoji Government College here organised “popular lectures on biotechnology” sponsored by Department of Biotechnology, New Delhi, recently.

G. Archuna, Chair, School of Biotechnology, Bharathidasan University, spoke on ‘Pheromones in rodent and insect pest management’.

He elaborated the loss caused by rodents at home and in the agricultural lands.

A considerable amount of loss in crop production occurs due to pests. Though various methods are in use to curb the menace each one has its own merits and demerits. He explained the applications of pheromones in pest management. Modern molecular techniques are used to improve the efficacy of these chemicals to use in the field.

A. Muthusamy, associate professor of Manipal Life Sciences Centre, spoke on “Plant cell, tissue, organ culture: Advances in biotechnological applications”. He narrated the procedure of tissue culture techniques and its importance in development of new varieties of plant which have drought, disease and salt tolerance. P.Mariappan, Assistant Professor, Rajah Serfoji Government College, in his lecture “medical implications of developmental biology” spoke on the relationship between life style and infertility and the treatment for infertility-in vitro fertilization.
