Want Centre to withdraw move to amend Criminal Procedure Code
SALEM: Court proceedings were disrupted when lawyers of Salem courts staged an agitation here on Tuesday in response to the State-wide call given by their fora to urge the Union Government to withdraw the move to amend Criminal Procedure Code (Cr.P.C).
Almost all works came to a standstill in various courts in the district. Members of the Salem Bar Association staged a demonstration in front of the court complex here to show their protest. Mr. Paramasivam presided over the agitation.
The lawyers had been protesting against certain amendments to Cr.P.C the Union Government had intended to make. The lawyers said that the amendments were against the principles of natural justice. It would also violate basic rights of the accused enshrined in the Constitution, and embolden politicians in power, and the police.
They warned that their strike would intensify if the Government failed to respond immediately.
