Irked over delay in fee disbursal

Coimbatore: Irked over the "inordinate delay" in disbursal of their professional sitting fee, the 23 State brief defence counsel appearing for the undefended accused in the Coimbatore serial blasts case have decided to boycott the special court on Monday.

Of the 23 defence counsel, six are from outstation. For those hailing from Coimbatore, the professional sitting fee was fixed at Rs. 1,500 and for those from outstation, it was Rs. 2,500 per day. Professional fee is fixed for half-a-day if the proceedings were for less than three hours.

Normally, the State Government sanctioned payment of fee for the entire fiscal and the disbursement used to be done on a monthly basis based on the report prepared by the special court on the basis of attendance.

For the current year, the sanction for disbursal of fee due in April has not yet come.

Crucial phase

As a result, when the trial is going through a crucial phase, the advocates have gone without fee for the last five months.

Advocates feel that there is an inordinate delay on the part of the Government in sanctioning the fee.

Hence, to draw the attention of the Government, the advocates have decided to boycott the court on Monday and a decision on the future course of action would be taken, senior defence counsel P. Thirumalairajan told reporters on Wednesday.
