TIRUNELVELI: The Tirunelveli town police arrested 40 members of Sri Lankan Tamil Protection Movement when they staged a demonstration here on Friday condemning the “police excess” on the advocates on the Madras High Court premises.

Raising slogans against the police, the protestors said the “attack” unleashed by the law-enforcers on the advocates, “who were protesting for the cause of Sri Lankan Tamils”, was totally unwarranted.

Tirunelveli city district secretary of Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam K.M.A. Nizam, Tirunelveli district secretary P.A. Saravanan and MDMK’s State deputy secretary of youth wing T.M. Rajendran were among those who were arrested.

Though a group of Pattali Makkal Katchi cadres participated in the demonstration, they left the venue in a car once the police started arresting the protestors.


Members of the Tuticorin Bar Association observed a fast here on Friday to condemn the attack on lawyers in Chennai recently .

T.M. Prabu, president, led the fast. In Kovilpatti, the members of the bar association led by T. Thenmohan, joint secretary of the Tamil Nadu Advocates’ Association took out a rally and staged a demonstration.

In Tiruchendur, forty lawyers observed a fast. S.K. Chandrasekaran, president of the bar association, led the agitation.
