MADURAI: P. Thirumalai, a practising advocate here, has filed a writ petition before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the Madurai Municipal Corporation to pay his fee.

He had represented the Corporation before the District Court in several civil cases from the year 1992 to April 2006.

Disposing of the writ petition, Justice N. Paul Vasanthakumar said: "It is unfortunate that the petitioner who defended the cases of the third respondent [corporation] is forced to approach this court for settlement of his advocate fee. The third respondent is not justified in denying or delaying the payment of the fee."

The Judge directed the authorities concerned to consider the issue and pass appropriate orders within four weeks.

In his affidavit, Mr. Thirumalai claimed the Corporation owed him fee arrears of Rs.14,07,807. He had sent two reminders to the authorities on July 19 and August 17, but received a standard reply saying the issue was under consideration.
