Communist Party of India (Marxist) has sought Union Law Minister Ashwani Kumar’s resignation.
The State General Secretary of the party, G. Ramakrishnan, told journalists in Coimbatore on Wednesday that the CBI’s act of sharing a report at the instance of the Law Minister had set a bad precedent. This showed that the CBI was not independent and was a puppet of the Union Government.
After the Attorney General G.E. Vahanvati and Additional Solicitor General Harin Raval had told the court that the CBI had not shared the report with anyone, the CBI director had come on record to say that the investigation agency had shared the report with the executive.
The Law Minister’s interference in the matter was a clear attempt to cover up the scam and sabotage the investigation.
Mr. Ramakrishnan said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should make a statement on the floor of Parliament on the issue.
“The PM owes an explanation to Parliament, to the people.”
The CPM opposed the proposed National Water Policy 2012 of the Union Government, which aimed at privatising water distribution for drinking purpose and irrigation.
It was also opposed to the partial decontrol of sugar and direct transfer of subsidy to the beneficiaries.
On the recent caste violence in Marakkanam, Mr. Ramakrishnan came down heavily on the Pattali Makkal Katchi saying it was to prevent the erosion of its support base that the party had indulged in violence against the Dalits.
“It is a planned, systematic attack on the Dalits,” he said and appreciated the State Government’s action against the trouble makers.
The CPM leader also said that the CPI and his party had come together to stage a State-wide protest on May 8 to condemn the violence against Dalits in Marakanam and Dharmapuri.
