AN EYESORE:A cesspool of wastewater outside the guest house which functions as temporary sports hostel at Annai Sathya stadium in Thanjavur.

Lack of proper drainage and open cleaning of utensils and letting out wastewater in the open is polluting the environs around the guest house near the main building from where the sports hostel is functioning at Annai Sathya Stadium.

The area stinks because of the stagnation of wastewater. Morning walkers and players in the volleyball court and tennis court nearby have to bear the stench.

The sports hostel construction work which should have been completed by June have not been completed so far. Fifty eight students stay in the temporary hostel functioning from the guest house near the main building.

They are studying in various schools in the town. They are provided food at the rate of Rs. 70 per head per day.

The guest house is dormitory type and kitchen functions from one corner. Utensils are scrubbed and washed in the open and the wastewater flows from the building and stagnates there.

“We are not able to bear the stench. The area should be cleaned and bleaching powder applied. This is necessary till the new hostel starts functioning,” said players and walkers. Rainwater also stagnates in the front area of the stadium near the basketball court. The walkers’ path obstructs the flow of water as there is no drain. Enquiries revealed that there is only one sweeper in the hostel. Proper upkeep of the hostel is necessary as the environment should not be polluted in a stadium where people come to get a whiff of fresh air and exercise, players said.
