The Kulapati Munshi Award of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, the Nilgiris Kendra, was conferred on animal welfare activist Nigel Otter and wife Ilona Otter, a Finnish veterinarian, at a function held here on Sunday.

The award given annually in the name of Kulapati K.M. Munshi who founded the Bhavan in 1938 was to recognise and honour a citizen of the Kendra who has done excellent and outstanding service to society in any special field.

Giving away the award the chairman of the Kendra and former chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission M.R. Srinivasan said that in taking care of animals especially those which fall under the stray category the services of the awardees have been noteworthy. Such contributions need to be acknowledged and recognised.

Kendra secretary Usha Sriram said that everyone should adopt the live and let live policy. Kindness and compassion should be shown to animals.

Nigel Otter and Ilona Otter spoke.

Committee member Ramjee proposed a vote of thanks.
