Justifying the reasons behind supporting the All Indian Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in Sankarankoil by-election, Puthiya Thamizhagam president K. Krishnasamy has exuded confidence over the “resounding victory” of S. Muthuselvi, being fielded by the ruling party in the reserve segment for the March 18 poll.

Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, Dr. Krishnasamy, who is on a 3-electioneering at Sankarankoil since Wednesday, said the PT decided to support the AIADMK as it did in the last Assembly polls because the Jayalalithaa-led Tamil Nadu Government had allotted Rs. 7.78 crore for paying the tuition fee of the Dalit students studying in the self-financing colleges and was contemplating the possibilities of allocating 22.50 per cent of the State Budget as Special Component Plan for the welfare of the “oppressed community”.

Moreover, the Tamil Nadu Government “had created assets” in the rural areas while giving free goats and cows to the poor while curbing the land grabbing by influential persons.

However, he disapproved the State Government's strategy at Paramakkudi where six Dalits lost their lives in police firing.

“If the PT can work closely with the AIADMK, it can persuade the ruling party to do something more for the Dalits' welfare. Otherwise this goal cannot be achieved so easily,” Dr. Krishnasamy noted. He said the ‘corporate characters' of the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party, “which used to capture power with the temporary electoral alliances with regional parties” in the past, had backfired this time in five States including Uttar Pradesh.
