CHENNAI: Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer has appealed to lawyers of the Madras High Court to give up their strike and return to work.

In a statement, he said: “Now that the Supreme Court has appealed to the Bar to resume work, I hope, with a sense of professional responsibility, that the lawyers will do their duty so that the court is no longer a functional anarchy but an operational instrumentality.”

Noting that the lawyers were on strike on the Sri Lankan issue, he said: “The battle ground is not the Chennai court premises but Colombo and Jaffna. The robes of the Bar in Chennai shall not be robbed of their fundamental professional obligation by politics being fought in a neighbouring country.”
