In a bid to promote a safe environment and to create awareness among students, the ‘Kovilpatti Environment League’, was launched in Kovilpatti on Monday.

After launching the programme at the Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Kovilpatti, K. Vijaya Karthikeyan, Sub Collector of Kovilpatti, said students of nineteen schools in Kovilpatti town would be involved in this week-long programme. Collection of wastes from their schools and surroundings, planting of saplings and drawing contest on environmental awareness were the key features of the programme.

With this new initiative, the students would play an exemplary role in promoting safe environment. Two teams have been formed to assess the performance of students. Officials from Kovilpatti Municipality would be involved in the assessment.

Waste collection points have been arranged in each of the participating schools. Wastes would be segregated as recyclable and non –recyclable and collection points have been differentiated with green and red colours. Officials from the Department of Forests and representatives of Kovilpatti Rotary Club would extend cooperation for this programme.

Prizes would be given to winners based on their performances, he said. There are plans to organise similar programmes in colleges in the second phase, he said.
