The State Khadi and Village Industries department has proposed to modernise all Khadi Krafts in the State with the consent of the Chief Minister, said T. P. Poonachi, Khadi and Village Industries Minister.
Speaking to presspersons after inspecting the Khadi Kraft showroom in the city on Thursday, Mr. Poonachi said the department had fixed a sales target of Rs. 1.50 crore for khadi products and Rs. 78 lakh for village industries products for Tiruchi district for this year.
The officials and staff of the showrooms must take the initiative to achieve the target, he said.
Village-based yarn units were functioning in Kalathupatti, Idaiyapatti and Karungulam village in Manapparai block in the district, apart from a textile manufacturing unit in Karungulam, soap and candle manufacturing unit in Samayapuram, and a footwear manufacturing unit in Tiruchi city. The district has Khadi Kraft showrooms in Tiruchi, Tiruverumbur, Lalgudi, and Manapparai.
The yarn and textile manufacturing units produced Rs. 4.16-lakh worth yarn and clothes last year. The target for the current year was Rs. 35.20 lakh, Mr. Poonachi said.
The department had proposed to introduce new silk sari varieties shortly.
Jayashree Muralidharan, Collector, R. Manoharan, MLA and Chief Whip of the AIADMK, D. Rajathi, president, District Panchayat, Sampath Kumar, deputy director, Khadi and Village Industries, accompanied the minister.
