CHENNAI: Reports that a ‘mysterious disease’ was spreading in Stanley Hospital and that a large number of students were being admitted were completely unfounded, a press release from the Health department has said.
Only one nursing student and two medical students received treatment for a common fever over the last two days and they are well now, the release says. In the interest of their safety, they were initially admitted to the intensive care unit, though they did not require intensive care at any stage.
The Chief Secretary convened a meeting on Friday with the Health Secretary, Medical Education Director and heads of government hospitals, besides other top officials of the health department. He had ordered that steps be taken to keep medical college hospital and hostel premises clean.
Efforts are being taken on a war-footing to clean up the medical college hospitals and hostels of medical and nursing students. Repair works required in toilets are also being taken up, the release says.
