Coimbatore: To enhance English language proficiency of its students, Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences (KITS) Deemed University has upgraded the English curriculum for its second year B.E., B.Tech. and first year MBA students.
A release said the English department of the deemed university had incorporated a major portion of Cambridge University's Business English Certification (BEC) and the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in the curriculum. Faculty members of the English department had introduced the changes with academic input from the British Council, Chennai.
First year B.E. and B.Tech. students would do a course in communication skills. In the second year, they would study technical communication and also sit for a test of proficiency in English. First year MBA students would go through the Business English course. After their university examinations in these subjects, the students would have the opportunity to sit for the BEC and IELTS examinations.
The department had an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) Centre that housed the Computer-aided Language Lab (CALL), Conventional Language Lab (CLL) and Audio Visual Language Lab (AVLL).
About 200 students would appear for the BEC examinations towards the end of the academic year.
