COIMBATORE: Karunya University has inaugurated a department of extension and continuing education.
It will adopt 15 villages in the vicinity for development activities.
According to a university release, the department will be involved in activities such as awareness campaigns on health, women development, Government welfare schemes and Right to Information Act.
Self-Help Groups will be formed and training will be imparted on income generating activities.
Training needs of local unemployed population will be assessed by conducting participatory rural appraisals. Training will be provided using expertise available at various departments of the university.
Operation and maintenance of farm machinery, electronic gadgets, audio-visual equipment, basics of civil construction, maintenance and repair of computer hardware, production of tissue culture plants, bakery technology and retailing are some of the courses that are planned.
Training in goat and rabbit rearing and organic farming, mushroom cultivation, bee keeping, ornamental fisheries and vermi composting are the areas identified to overcome the seasonal unemployment.
